True Collaboration

True collaboration is a distinction from what people usually mean when they say 'collaboration.' The standard definition is intramural - collaborating within the walls of your org or business. But few serious business authors - I've yet to see the first one - truly act upon the notion that we should collaborate openly with our 'competition' - other companies who are working on the same things. This would require open knowhow, thus evolving the world to a Post-Scarcity Economy.

True collaboration is the 'giving' sense of divine proportion. Translated to practice - this means that a company is open to share its productive knowhow with others. In fact, its business model recognizes the potential advantage of open collaboration. True collaboration is embodied in the concept of Distributive Enterprise - an enterprise that has processes for both accepting and sharing of economically-significant knowhow. This can be as simple as an open wiki for sharing best practice, or more complex such as consulting or enterprise startup assistance. This assistance is published openly and openly accessible - meaning that it is made available at reasonable cost. This assistance can be anywhere in the range from free, to low value at high cost/price, high value at low cost/price, or anywhere in between. This depends on the quality of the assistance provider - where ideal is free information, and reasonable price for high value services.

The positive connection of collaboration in enterprise to economic value distribution must be made explicit. Otherwise, how can we claim that something is collaborative if economic value creation is not distributed or shared - and not only between the agents involved but also with the greater world? To make this distinction - we use the words True Collaboration.

We also distinguish True Collaboration from purely social interaction. We are not talking about social collaboration or having fun. We are talking about raw productive power that enables humans to transcend the reptilian brain of fear and hate that is found at the lower rungs of Maslow's Pyramid.

With true collaboration, concepts such as Level 6 Leadership and Great to Sublime emerge as the new norm.

The Civic Democracy of True Collaboration

We believe in a participatory approach to life, where true responsibility for the world around us means that we take a collaborative approach to economics. This means open, collaborative product development as opposed to hundreds of companies reinventing the wheel while claiming superior results. This is a faulty mental model, where a priori the results cannot be superior because of the doctrine of Collaborative Advantage . When this happens, we believe that innovation will be unleashed - as many more people are relieved from financial dependence to pursue their dreams. In such a world, there will be fewer specialists and more generalists. This is due to the limits of specialization or other sub-human tendencies, described in critiques such as One Dimensional Man or The Best and the Brightest. In a new world, more people will be creative - implying that more people will be productive in terms of creating authentic value - not Redistributing value inside of a parasitic paradigm.

With increased participation, people can engage in activities formerly taken on by specialists - and demonetize them for fun. So that people can take health, legal, manufacturing, government, education, politics, etc - in their own hands. We can realize a world of DIY and more relevantly - DIT - productivity. This is where concepts of Swarm Builds, desktop microfactories, health-wealth-and-wisdom for everyone - and generic recapture of enterprise from professionalized siloes to more responsive, distributed, distributive production. Such a model would unleash rapid learning, which is required for human evolution, and indeed is a civic responsibility for any global steward. We go so far as promoting the psychosocial, collaborative, and intellectual integration of humans, as in the qualities that we seek in our collaborators - see Candidate Assessment.
