Look at that frost pattern on our door. The frost came from a combination of moisture and contrasting temperatures… but where did the diamond pattern come from? No shadows cross the door to create such marks. The only guess I have is that somehow the inside of the door is causing this pattern to emerge, but what kind of manufacture would fill a door with a complex criss-cross pattern?

A snow-flake has patterns too, maybe because each frozen point (plus whatever is below, in the door itself) changes conditions for the next point, in a kind of game of life fashion?

Marcin, Brittany, just a quick hello. I’m working very intensely on helping our Kenyan participants but when I have a chance I would like to help set up your blog as a venue for our Minciu Sodas laboratory http://www.ms.lt Do I have login privileges to do that? I would mark that content here is in the Public Domain except as noted otherwise and also put up a link to our lab that this is a Worknet. Then I will include your RSS into our lab’s stream at http://www.ms.lt/news.php and it will be easier to go back and forth between our projects. Good to think of you and we are having a large meeting here March 29-30 on the occassion of the European Union meeting of the COMMUNIA thematic network for the Public Domain which we are hosting. Perhaps you can come? We will have many African and European participants here and I would show you our site for an appropriate technology center in the village here. If there is a funder I will shout! Andrius

Andrius, can you explain what you mean by setting up our blog as a venue for Minciu Sodas?

From what I know of hollow-core door construction, most of them are a sandwich of panels (for apartment doors, cheapest veneer on the block, metal doors i don’t know so well) with a hexagonal or diamond pattern cardboard or plastic spacer matrix between to keep the panels spaced. That’s probably what’s producing your pattern, the void spaces either insulate naturally or are filled with some sort of insulation, and the spacer conducts cold into the room, causing condensation above wherever the spacers are….

    Just speculation
