About

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon. Low carbon steel is <0.3% carbon, and high carbon is 0.6-1%. Ultra high carbon steel is up to ~2%, and used for super hard things like punches. The more carbon, the more brittle. >2% is called cast iron, which appears to be a misnomer because it's technically a 'really high carbon content steel', which melts at lower temperature than steel (1200C as opposed to 1500 C). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_steel

Overview

Steel is used in almost every machine of the GVCS.
