Analysis of Industry Standards Protocol for Workshops

In order to study prior work that has already been done on Workshops, a useful start is to:

  1. Do online research
  2. Survey people/groups who have already done build workshops

To do online research, simply search for all the workshops in the world, across all time - and list them one by one. Once you find them, it is useful to send a survey to each workshop organizer to build upon the learnings of that workshop. We discuss the survey next.

Survey for Workshop Organizers

The main purpose of the survey is to draw all possible lessons from people who have run workshops in the past. This helps to improve the OSE workshop - and to clarify both the Value Proposition and Unique Value Proposition.

There were between dozens to hundreds of formal or less formal build workshops - so getting data on at least 24 would be the minimum - but it would be important that the workshops were relatively recent, as 3D printers have improved dramatically and are getting better all the time. The main point to find out is how long a build takes, as that determines how this can compete with factory production.

Survey Design for Researching Past and Ongoing 3D Printer Build Workshops

  • What is your email?
  • How many 3D printers were built in the workshop?
  • How many people participated including instructors?
  • How long did the build take?
  • Did everyone finish the build successfully?
  • Did everyone calibrate the printer and make their first print?
  • How long did the workshop take to organize (part sourcing, announcement, publicity, etc)?
  • Which 3D printer was built? (Prusa, Ultimaker, MOST Delta, Makerbot, Folger Tech Prusa 2020, etc)
  • Approximately how many parts was the build made from, including nuts and bolts?
  • When did the workshop happen?
  • Please provide a link to the workshop website, or any online presence/discussions about the workshop.
  • Did you organize this 3D printer build workshop, or just participate in one?
  • Is this workshop ongoing? How many times did this workshop take place?
  • Was there revenue model for making the workshop financially sustainable for the organizer, or was this more a hobby/subsidized effort?
  • Is the workshop still being offered?
  • What worked well in the workshop?
  • What could have been improved in the workshop?
  • What would it take to make the workshop an ongoing event? Would this be worthwhile?
  • Do you think that the workshop like this could scale in the number of such workshops offered? What do you think would be necessary for the workshop to scale?
  • Do you think that this workshop could compete with factory production as a viable production model for producing 3d printers for end users?
  • What percentage of the population do you think would prefer to build their own 3D printer in one day - as opposed to buying the same 3D printer off the shelf?
  • What do you think is the most important quality of a workshop that would make it attractive to DIY builders?
  • Would you participate in a 1 day 3D printer build workshop if it was offered? What is the most important feature of the workshop that would attract you to participate?
  • Do you know of any workshops being offered to the public that offer a 1-day build? Please provide a link.
  • Are you interested in collaborating with OSE on improving a one-day 3D Printer build workshop as a collaborative effort with intent of making the workshop scale?
  • What other questions should we ask in this survey that you would like to know the answers to? We can add them as soon as we get your feedback.
  • Any other comments?
