In the GVCS 50 development stage, make sure that tools fit together as a set. (In scenario of generalized opes source product development, create standards for interfaces based on post-scarcity design) Fitting together means that:

  • Number of unique functional units is minimized, so their use is redundant
    • On level of components, modules, and entire devices
  • All products can be made on the fabrication machines of the GVCS

Discussion

The Open Source Technology Pattern Language aims to capture the fundamental building blocks for devices. The practical result of this pattern language is that machine design should use the least number of generalized components.

To give a radical example: the Universal Rotor can function as the Quick Connect Wheels for the tractor, or even for the Bulldozer if a gearbox is utilized. The Rotor can be used as the core of Hammermill, string trimmer, washing machine, pelletizer, sawmill, and other parts. Careful attention must be taken to design the proper interface to make the Universal Rotor funciton with each of the above machines. In practice, the universal rotor as manifested in the Quick Connect Wheels can be used as both a wheel unit and as a tractor loader-mounted implement.

Review Checklist

  • What other machines is the component used in?
  • What is necessary for the component to be interchangeable?
  • What is the cost of making the component interchangeable?
  • What specific interface module can be designed to make the component interchangeable?
