Design for Manufacturability
From Open Source Ecology
Basics
- Often Abbreviated as DFM
- Essentially the Design Principle of designing products with the people (and machines) who make them taken into account
- Examples:
- Designing Castings that will be Machined Down to have integrated Workholding points (or something for a Lathe 's Chuck to Clamp Around
- Using Countersunk Screws to allow for the tip of the screw to "slide" into alignment (If a standard cylindrical hole is used one must be perfectly lined up for it to work)
- Using Screws Unlikely to Cam Out (in options where that is not an issue and/or if Fastener Torque Specification is used)
- Writing All The Information in Relevant/Plain Terms in the Blueprints (IE Say 14 AWG Romex instead of "15 Amp Circuit" etc
- Part Labeling / Part Versioning (Can be printed into the part itself as a Relief or with a different color of the same material etc with plastic parts, or be Laser Engraved with either a Laser Cutter on different settings from the cutting pass/as a part of post-processing, etc)
- Fool Proofing Assembly (by making it so parts can only be inserted correctly, granted this goes against part commonality to an extent, so may only make sense for some assemblies)
- Reduction in the Amount of Fastener Types used (and clear labeling of the type used, so proper (not "close enough") screwdrivers etc can be used.
