One note on volume, it's a bit "clunky", but if you right mouse button (RMB) click on a person's name in voice chat it brings up more options one of which is volume, so you can mix volumes so that everyone is at a good level (ie make people with loud mics at 80% and quiet people at 130% etc)
👏

I can go in voicechat if anyone needs to test all that, just @ me
Avatar
matt-jarm 08-Jul-21 08:10 PM
Ok, that sounds promising… I think part of the problem was that Marcin was the only person with a mic on…
Avatar
Eric Lotze 08-Jul-21 08:11 PM
that too!
I need to figure out why the audio cut like that as well
I think "push to talk" may help, as it may be the voice detection cutting it like that
Avatar
matt-jarm 08-Jul-21 08:35 PM
Ok, cool. I didn’t see that option on the mobile version but will look again, or use desktop app. It was also my first time using discord…
Avatar
Eric Lotze 08-Jul-21 08:37 PM
it's fine, i have barely scratched the surface myself. I'd say mobile works fine for text etc, but for that reason may be odd for audio/video, or just option menu heavy stuff
I'll mess around with it some and see if i can get that working though, especially on-site, a laptop (short of a hardened one) isn't practical!

one of many examples of running X11 apps in containers

it's probably in the same order of magnitude as complex to setup as your own linux distribution 🙂

an interesting take would be to run these containers in a kubernetes cluster, and let anyone dynamically provision what they need when they need it

still doesn't solve the integrated workflow need; that would require more work

Comment on the sufficiency criterion. It's a fine criterion for which tools to use but it can't be the only one. We sent people to the moon without CAD software so by just the sufficiency criterion - pen and paper should be enough and EVERYONE has access to pen and paper. So clearly there needs to be additional criteria on which tools and which versions of tools.
Perhaps another criteria is scalability. If you want 1,000 or 10,000 people working on something - you NEED some version control even if it's just SVN.
💯

it's also possible that the complaint of the parts tree being more complicated in the latest FreeCAD has changed since the last time anyone did a comparison.

I'm in favor of scripting everything in Python, and versioning that.
I'm looking at ways for FreeCAD to load and run python scripts, and I'm considering a central server which pulls git commits of Python script snippets,
and reconstructs them into a FreeCAD file "on the fly", reproducibly every time from the same git repo, that people can download.

@braden see: https://wiki.opensourceecology.org/wiki/Marcin%27s_Initial_Apprenticeship_Assessment for some raw insight into the OSE apprenticeship model (just stumbled onto this wiki page, might help refine your questions for tomorrow)

(I don't know the context of why @Marcin answered these questions, as most of them seem to target the apprentices themselves; I suppose he's impersonating the learners, perhaps an empathy building exercise?)

my interpretation of what's written in there, is that apprenticeship might help in leveling the steep learning curve, and compress a decade of design+build+living experience into a few months, to move the needle on reproducible design+builds(?) (edited)

One other thought I had which is salient to our discussion is documenting not just design outputs but design intent. GD&T and good CAD modeling practices is a way to represent design intent (so in a sense a good CAD model already captures some design intent). However, GD&T can't capture everything a designer intends. Capturing the needs of the problem your trying to solve (1) helps sanity check the design so you can avoid pitfalls and (2) allows people to replicate your design process and not just your design outputs.
