Engine Block

Basics

  • The "Core" of the engine
  • Typically used in reference to Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs), but can also be applied to External Combustion Engines (ECEs) if such a block is used, as opposed to independant cylendars
  • It holds most of the core components:
    • Acts as the outer part of the cylendars
    • Holds various rods/axles
    • Can even have lines / ports for liquids (is this ever done?)

Production Methods

  • Most often:
    • "Blank" is cast, often by Investment Casting (need to see if this is becoming outdated)
    • Blank is Heat Treated (Metalwork)
    • Blank Is Machined (Typically via CNC Mill ) to acheive more precise Tolerances
    • This step may occur at seperate facilities, but:
    • The final holes etc are drilled, and the engine block is finalized (plus any other treatments etc)
