Basics

  • The edible eggs of a type of ant
  • Similar to Roe or Caviar (the latter of which is often borderline poaching, and leading to endangerment of some species, due to it's insane value on the market, so a potential substitute...)
  • It IS an animal product, but perhaps can be done like Beekeeping where it isn't 100% harmful and more so symbiotic/non harmful but technically parasytic (ie nnot 2 way exchange, but no negativ effect), NOT predatory (take and bad effects)
  • Is traditional foodstuff, but is becoming "hip" and sells for high profit due to it's difficulty in harvesting (near hunter-gather levels as of now, and also is semi-destructive)
    • Similar to early "wild honey" where natural beehives were essentially used, not helped + farmed
  • Granted more research is needed to see if there IS any modified/intensified farming, in the past, now, or in labs/development
  • Should be relitively easy (like beekeeping, main concerns would be localized epidemics in the hive/comony, food needs of the colony, and technical housing space etc, all semi easily adresssable with the proper literature and/or SME 's
  • Also need to see where the market is Eating Insects and/or non-avian eggs it taboo in many countries
    • But india, latin america, and many other areas eat Locusts / Grasshoppers , often fried and the are quite good!
    • Also can be sold as a flour, BSF powder, or Locust / Cricket powder is sold for protien
    • Also MAY be a minute source of Formic Acid , but this is VERY inefficient, and a semi-gorey process, so most likely isn't worth it
      • ALSO gmo yeast/algae/e-coli could be given this gene and used for this (if it hasn't been done already) for more intitial work, but much higher yields, and less effort later, if a biological route is 100% needed, as opposed to chemical (co)synthesis
  • Also may be useful in a similar to BSF for bio-digestion / reduction of organic waste
