Laser Diode vs CO2 Laser Cutting/Engraving Systems Comparison

Basics

Laser Diode

Advantages

  • No mirrors required, only the diode, and lenses on that axis
  • No Seperate Laser Tube Needed
  • CAN be cheaper

Disadvantages

  • Seem to be sold anywhere from 1-10w no more than that
  • So they can only do engraving, and some of the higher up wattage, and the 10w laser can cut some materials (wood, acrylic)

CO2 Laser

Advantages

  • 40 watt is usually the lowest power offered, and thus is far more capable than diode systems
  • Usually has a large bed more comprable to a CNC Router

Disadvantages

  • Usually needs a watercooler for the tube
  • Has a glass laser tube (fragile)
  • Has a larger bed (great for larger projects, but takes up more space)
