Multimachine Deployment Strategy

The Multimachine project of OSE aims to develop a universal machining system for producing precision parts down to ball bearings, the foundation of modern civilization.

We are starting with our existing FeF Lathe. We are building upon recent developments of the Concrete Lathe.

Development strategy:

  1. Allocate $30k from Kauffman Proposal to development.
  2. Focus on round ways as in the Concrete Lathe to produce a universal precision motion system
  3. Begin with a concrete lathe as the first tool, using our existing lathe for making the spindle
    1. Retrofit with indexing head on head stock
    2. Produce a Versamill (active cutter with z axis) attachment for precision milling/grinding on lathe
  4. Make independetly with lathe and Versimil - centerless grinder - for making precision shaft
  5. With Versimil independetly - assist fabrication of blades for centerless grinder - for making precision shaft
    1. Internal/external keyway. Active spindle facilitates internal keyways, though these could be done on a lathe
  6. Secure an induction furnace for hardening round stock ($1-5k off-shelf)
  7. Produce precision round stock for ways via Versamill/induction furnace
  8. Build out a vertical mill with above infrastructure

The above allows a general spindle (one for high speed, second for high power) and general ways to be created - for applications in all machine configurations (mill, drill, lathe, grinders) from which point we are able to create any configuration of high precision machine (2/10000 inch accuracy over 6 feet).l We will achieve this by using stock mild steel followed by hardening and grinding - with concrete bed machines - to produce CNC-retrofittable, heavy duty precision machines at the cost of concrete and steel stock.

We are expecting to deliver $200k-equivalent CNC interchangeable tool machines at a materials cost of approximately $3-5k, using open source Arduino-based controllers and hydraulic motors with encoders - where we will fabricate the high-torque hydraulic motors on the OSE Multimachine.
