Basics

  • Laptops Can Run Off Of "Wall Power" Alone

Case Study by User: Eric

  • My Alienware M15 (Generation 4) Has Served Me Well for Something They Were Selling in The Clearance Section (Albeit still wasn't a cheap computer, but it wasn't latest gen when i was purchasing it is what i am getting at )
  • HOWEVER
    • It has been chewing through batteries
  • Granted i am unsure to what extent it is due to Charge/Discharge Cycles and the issue of if the BMS can handle the issue of Should you Leave Battery Operated Electronics Plugged In
    • But given any good BMS/PSU should be able to do a simple bypass once at 100%, i can't completely rule this out
  • HOWEVER given the CPU/GPU can approach 90-100*C when at high load even with the fans on max and non-essentials like backlighting/audio/screen brightness off, i think it is due to poor thermal management + insulation between the "guts" and the battery pack
  • Either way before buying another battery pack i attempted to just run it with the battery compartment emptied out and only off of the AC Adapter...and it worked!
  • Even at the intense load of Rendering Stuff in Blender or Doing VR
  • I haven't gotten any hard data, but the cooldown time may be faster/max temp a few degrees lower, although that may just be confirmation bias / too many other variables!
  • ANYWHO i just thought i'd document this on-wiki in case it helps anyone in a similar situation
