  • Why are you interested in collaborating with us?

Proprietary lock-in and the difficulty in reverse engineering, modifying and repairing machinery/technology means that often the only way to solve a problem with a piece of technology is to throw more money at the problem. This only benefits banks, elite groups of service engineers who have access to the proprietary knowledge and who are within the business ecosystem of the companies and the shareholders of the companies who develop the proprietary technology.

Open source hardware empowers individuals to use their skills to solve the problem and actually crowd-source solutions perhaps from disparate groups of experts online and ask each other for help on the problem.

  • How do you think that the GVCS can address pressing world issues?

Once you break the cycle of credit at high interest being used to buy technologies which are expensive and prone to breaking through built-in obsolescence in order to gain a modest financial return which is ever decreasing at increasing risk to the individuals borrowing money; the ability for individuals to 'opt-out' or, at least, reduce their reliance on monetary systems becomes possible because they already produce most of what they need to live. I am not sure that that would re-stabilise the global monetary system but it would certainly help individuals to protect themselves from the negative impacts of such instability.

I am an Electronic Engineer, Entrepreneur, Hacker, Inventor, Maker.

Communications: social media / viral advertising.

Organizational: Basic Project Management / Resource Planning from Engineering Syllabus.

Computer Support: +8 years experience, I own a PC repair business.
Finances: I run the accounts for http//www.sukey.org
Design: I learnt electronic CAD (gEDA, gschem, pcb) and mechanical/structural CAD (solidworks) at university.
Natural Building: none
Electronics: I worked as a Firmware Engineer for two years for these guys (http://www.harmonymedical.co.uk/), now I work as an inventor/hacker/engineer for Moixa Technologies (http://www.moixaenergy.com/). I hack and tinker with electronics on a daily basis over at London Hackspace (http://london.hackspace.org.uk/). Automation: I am working on home and equipment automation systems as part of the Nanode team, basic industrial automation / robotics lab exercises at university.
Metallurgy: basic understanding.
Engineering: :) all of the above and below
Fabrication: FDM with Reprap in PLA, HDPE and ABS. Lasercutting MDF, Perspex. Woodwork, creating prototypes, learnt how to use an arc welder and an oxyacetylene torch at university while on an industrial training course, I make things all the time over at the hackspace.
Agriculture: I am a keen gardener! I love growing vegetables and making raised beds.
Energy: I worked professionally on energy reduction technologies which promote behaviour change.
I also work on an open source energy, water and gas consumption and generation monitoring device called the Nanode. Architecture: none, studied civil engineering for two years as part of Engineering degree. Might be able to do a professional site survey and make a representational computer model if I had help.
Video/Graphics/Art: I get by and try to make things look nice.

Education: I love teaching and disseminating ideas, I love helping people with problems.
Construction: my dad is an Irish builder and he showed me how to build a wall. I dug the foundations, mixed the cement and built a wall with him.

CNC: Reprap
Chemistry: best subject at secondary school, I used to love chemistry. I would be happy to dive into a huge textbook and pick up the knowledge as needed. Nearly went to study this at university because I loved it so much.
Product Design: none.
Other: awesome at cooking.

  • How have you already contributed to the project?

Working on Reprap 3D printers over in the UK at London Hackspace. I am on good terms / in contact with Adrian Bowyer who is the inventor of the Reprap.

HOW can you help?

  • How are you interested in contributing to the work of GVCS development?

Essentially I envisaged getting my friends and colleagues from London Hackspace, my friends and whoever was interested from the Nanode team to help bring all of your Digital Fabrication wikipedia articles up to the bleeding edge and trying to cross-pollinate with existing communities of collaborators.

If we can engage them then they will probably develop it for you.

We are already working on a few at London Hackspace:
3D Scanner (planned)
3D Printer (Reprap 'Prusa' Mendel build in progress)
Robotic Arm (We have a small prototype in development already).

I really try to get the most out of my week so when I am not asleep I am working on hacking. I suppose the best thing I can do is make sure I am hacking away on something you guys can use!

Which positions are available?

I talked about this with Marcin. I would love to come over and help. I need to crowd-fund my plane ticket because I am somewhat impecunious at the moment.

No. I can contribute time, skill and design effort but less so with money :(. I am trying to reduce my dependency on money in my own life and minimise my outgoings in order to have more time to contribute towards meaningful projects.

  • Would you like to see yourself working with us on a full-time basis?

Sure.

  • Are you interested in being part of the world's first, open source, resilient community? The GVCS is the preparatory step for the OSE Village Experiment - a 2 year, immersion experiment (2013-2014) for testing whether a real, thriving, modern-day prototype community of 200 people can be built on 200 acres using local resources and open access to information? We are looking for approximately 200 people to fill a diverse array of roles, according to the Social Contract that is being developed. This may be the boldest social experiment on earth - a pioneering community whose goal is to extend the index of possibilities regarding harmonious existence of humans, ecology, and technology - as a beacon of light to benefit of all people on Earth.

Yes, it would be epic.
