Mentoring?

One thing that's missing from this article - where the next generation of open source engineers will be coming from. What kind of provision do you have on these teams for young people who might not have as much practical experience or degrees, but have done some hacking on their own and want to contribute to a real project with other engineers? Yes!

This is exactly what I had in mind, when I began http://socialsynergyweb.org/educommons/, which is intended to be an open license distance learning platform. Meaning, the content there is released under an open license. In this case, we will use a dual-license (creative commons, Gnufreedoc)

So, over time, we are going to create a certification system, and a way for people to mentor and be mentored at all levels of expertise. In some cases, we will also deliver these courses for a very low cost in person, but the material will always be online as well.

And, in advanced stages, we would have a system set up that proves that you can design and/or fabricate withing specified tolerances and quality, in order to attain higher OSE certification. That is the general plan. For the short term, if you are interested in helping, but don't have practical experience, we want to help you get involved in a real project somehow, in ways that are satisfactory for your.
