Introduction

OSE Crash Courses are dense, 5 minute videos intended for rapid learning. They are dedicated to people who appreciate rapid learning, and can be used by learners of all speeds.

OSE's approach focuses on talent development within its developer pool, such that an integrated skill set of technical competency is gained as part of OSE collaboration. These competencies span the whole range of skills necessary to become an Integrated Human. While we begin with hard skills such as CAD on our mission to remove material scarcity, we include other arts, humanities, and sciences in the mix. We believe in interdisciplinary learning, which allows for a proper understanding of how one human activity relates to other parts of the world.

Requirements

The OSE Crash courses are intended to be definitive and dense surveys that allow the viewer to scan the content rapidly, with links to supporting material.

  1. Links are provided as interactive click events
  2. Pace is super fast and comprehensive
  3. Video edit is tight
  4. Tight script focuses on breadth rather than depth, where the depth can be accessed readily via links
  5. Intent of definitive tutorial on a given subject
  6. OSE Linux is used so there are no software conflicts, so that the screen looks identical as in the video, and so that everyone has a uniform copy of all required files. Intent is to remove software issues from getting in the way of learning.
  7. These are different from Lynda.com in that these are more streamlined and more survey in nature: software issues and settings are eliminated; sample files are already available in the OSE Linux distribution.
  8. Supporting videos may be created to provide further details, and these videos are linked from the core instructional as interactive media, such as in YouTube. However, these must be 15 seconds long or less, such that they load instantly and do not get the user lost, and have an interactive return link to the exact spot in the previous video where the viewer left off
  9. Balance overview vs. technical detail is included. Place all detail in supporting videos for sake of providing excellent overviews.
  10. Not a single second of dead time is present.
  11. Just enough viewing length is shown for a viewer to get their bearings.
  12. It may be assumed that the viewer should stop the vidoe frequently to absorb something
  13. It should be assumed that the audience is a rapid-learning viewer, such that slower learners simply do more pausing of the video
  14. Video is suitable for all skill levels, with no prior understanding required unless specifically noted. Prerequisites are interactive links at the beginning of the video
  15. Format is screencast or whiteboard as needed
  16. A supporting PDF is created by refactoring key concepts from the video using Scribus desktop publishing software
